"It will never happen to me." Almost every parent has said this. And yet, every year, children die in overheated cars, forgotten by their parents — often loving, attentive, organised parents. No socio-economic background is spared: doctors, judges, engineers, teachers are all affected.

For a long time, society reacted with judgment: "how can anyone forget?". Modern neuroscience gives a troubling answer: forgetting your child in the car is not a moral failing. It is a predictable cognitive failure, rooted in how our brain actually works. And that's exactly why prevention is essential.

The mechanics of a neurological tragedy

To understand forgotten baby syndrome, you have to accept a counter-intuitive idea: our brain doesn't work like a surveillance camera. It doesn't record everything, isn't aware of everything, and above all it runs two parallel memory systems that can come into conflict.

The first, managed by the basal ganglia, is responsible for habits. It's what gets you to the office without thinking about the route, what gets you up the stairs without looking at your feet, what drives 80% of your daily actions automatically. It's powerful, fast, energy-efficient — but deaf to the present moment.

The second, the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex, handles what's called prospective memory: memory for future intentions. It's this system that's supposed to remind you that today, exceptionally, baby needs to be dropped at daycare before the office. This memory is fragile, energy-hungry, and easily overridden by stress, fatigue, or simply by habit memory.

The work of Prof. David Diamond

American neuroscientist David Diamond, professor at the University of South Florida, is the leading researcher on these cases. Over 20 years, he has served as an expert witness in dozens of legal cases of babies forgotten in cars. His conclusion is unequivocal: "it is never negligence in the moral sense of the word".

Diamond identifies a typical scenario that recurs in almost every case:

  1. A break in routine — the parent who usually drops the child at daycare is replaced that day by the other parent, who doesn't normally make that trip.
  2. A stress factor — an important call, running late, fatigue, work worries, lack of sleep.
  3. A silent child — the baby is asleep, isn't crying, gives no sign of their presence.
  4. Autopilot — the brain switches into the usual routine (drive to the office, park the car, go up).
  5. The lapse — prospective memory is short-circuited. The parent sincerely believes they dropped the child off.

The factors that multiply the risk

No parent is immune, but certain circumstances multiply the odds of forgetting:

Sleep deprivation

A single night of broken sleep because of the baby is enough to halve prospective memory performance.

A change of routine

The factor most present in real cases. An unusual route multiplies the risk by 10.

Distractions

A call, a text, a GPS rerouting, an intense podcast: all cognitive overload.

A baby asleep in the back

Silence deprives the brain of the most powerful sensory reminder: the child's presence.

A rear-facing car seat

Recommended for passive safety, it makes the child invisible from the driver's seat.

Work-related stress

Worries, deadlines, high mental load: habit memory takes over.

These factors are not excuses: they are warning signs. If you recognise several of them in your daily life, this is precisely the moment to put safeguards in place.

Why a few minutes are enough

Once the child has been forgotten in the vehicle, the countdown is terrifying. A car is a thermal trap: the windows let in solar radiation and hold onto it. The cabin behaves like a greenhouse.

An infant's body heats up 3 to 5 times faster than an adult's. Severe heatstroke sets in at a body temperature of 40°C. At 42°C, neurological damage becomes irreversible. A car parked in the sun at 25°C outside can kill a baby in under an hour — even with the windows slightly open.

How to prevent the tragedy

Three complementary strategies have proven effective.

1. Build a foolproof habit

The principle: force your brain to go to the back of the vehicle every time you get out, even when you believe baby isn't there. The most common method: place an essential item (phone, handbag, work badge, office key) next to the child in the back seat. You can no longer get out without going to retrieve it — and so without seeing the child.

2. Set up an external safety net

Ask the daycare, the childminder, or a grandparent: "If I haven't dropped baby off by 9am, call me immediately." Many childcare providers apply this protocol spontaneously; make sure it's properly in place and the numbers are up to date.
